Julius and I did our presentation on juicing. In juicing we learned Juicing is a mechanical process for extracting vitamins, minerals and other natural fluids from raw fruits and vegetables. This process takes a solid such as a fruit or a vegetable and after the process you are left with liquid only. Juicing is different from eating the whole product because The extracted liquid contains the majority of the vitamins, minerals, and other substances present in a fruit or vegetable.   These are also known as Phytonutrients. juicing takes all the natural substances from fruits and vegetables leaving behind the less nutrient rich solid fibers.   No artificial chemicals are present or added to the juice, including preservatives.   Being highly perishable, one must drink the juice right away.   However, it is significantly better than store bought juice as it has not been processed or pasteurized. Nor is there a need to add sugar or ingredients to improve its natural taste,  possibly detracting from the Juice’s health benefits. WE also learned that there are two types of fibers present when juicing. Insoluble fibers helps to keep one's bowel movements regular, it also helps to fill you up and speeds up the passage of food through the digestive tract. Insoluble fiber include cellulose, and hemicellulose. The problem that occurs when juicing is that the insoluble fiber is not present in the drink. This can be solved by dumping the insoluble extract back into the juice. The stuff that is left into the juice is the soluble fibers. Soluble fibers help bacterial growth in the digestive tract. It also helps the body maintain a good blood sugar level and may help lower cholesterol. Another reason why juicing is good is because you can get the right amounts of fruit needed in one sitting. Because most people will not eat 4 cups of fruits and veggies per day.

Sheep Heart lab

1)The purpose of the pericardium is to protect the heart. It is the outer layer of the heart.

2) After observing the blood vessels connecting to the heart i saw that arteries differ from veins in their stucture because veins are smaller. Their functions differ because veins carry blood to the heart. Arteries carry blood away from the heart.

3)The function of the auricle that is placed inside the left and right atrium is increase capacity of atria.

4) The differences of the atria and ventricles is that the walla of ventricles are thicker and more muscular than the atria walls. Ventricles pump blood for heart.

7) The anchoring of the hearr valves by the chordae tendinae and pipillary muscles is important to the heart is it keeps blood from flowing backwards and keeps the valve blocked when blood tries to move backwards

9)The semilunar valves purpose is to not allow the blood to flow back from the arteries to the ventricles during the cardiac cycle. It also helps maintain the pressure put on the arteries. It separates the left ventricle from the opening of the aorta.

10) The valve disease occurs on the right side of heart, it results in swelling because the right side of the heart will affect the functioning of the structures, and one specific structure in the inferior vena cava.

12)   The left side of the heart deals with oxygenated blood, the left ventricle walls are thicker and has to pump oxygenated blood. The left side recieves oxygenated blood from pulmonary cells, then pumps throughout the body cells. The right side contains SA AV nodes, recieves deoxygenated blood from body organs through the superior and inferior vena cava and returns the blood through the pulmonary artery.

Unit 3 Reflextion

I enjoyed this unit about the cardiovascular system. I enjoyed the activities and labs. My favorite one was obviously the sheep lab and disecting the heart of a sheep. Even though it was really hard and hands on and smelled bad it helped with my understanding of where things were located. We learned about blood, and pumping oxygfen through the body with kidneys and lungs. We also learned about how these organs can cause disease and get viruses if the body is not maintained correctly. The cardiovascular system works by pumping blood through your body for oxygen. This is the important because if you dont have the proper circulatory system than the consequences may be fatal. Cardiovascular health is a healthy blood pressure, healthey cholesterol and a good heart health. This all includes keeping heathey with the 5 pillars of health. Promoting cardiovascular health is not doing things to hurt your body such as smoking and drinking. Just like many people want to know, I want to learn more about the brain which still has not been discovered completely by scientist.
